TikTok's Music Discovery Features Get Major Update

The Story

TikTok has launched a suite of new features specifically designed to improve music discovery for independent artists, marking the platform's most significant music-focused update since the launch of SoundOn, its in-house distribution service.

The centerpiece of the update is a new 'Rising Artists' section within the For You feed that algorithmically surfaces tracks from artists with under 50,000 followers who are gaining unusual traction. TikTok says the feature is designed to identify genuine breakout momentum before it reaches mainstream awareness, giving smaller artists increased exposure during their critical early growth phase.

The update also includes improved audio search capabilities — users can now hum, sing, or play a portion of a song to identify it, similar to Google's existing feature — and a redesigned Artist Profile that makes it easier for listeners to follow artists directly from song pages. TikTok has also introduced a 'Sounds Like' feature that recommends tracks to users based on the audio characteristics of songs they've engaged with, rather than relying purely on hashtags and trends.

For artists using TikTok for Artists (TikTok's analytics dashboard), the update adds new engagement metrics including follower conversion rate from video views, sound saves, and a breakdown of which video formats are driving the most profile visits.

Our Take

TikTok's relationship with independent artists has been complicated — the platform has driven enormous discovery but also created a 'one viral moment' culture that doesn't always translate into sustainable careers. This update feels like a genuine attempt to build more durable artist-audience connections within the platform.

The Rising Artists feature is the most significant element for independent musicians. Getting surfaced in that section during your early growth phase could compress what might take 12–18 months of grinding into a much shorter window. The key will be understanding what signals TikTok is using to define 'unusual traction' — early indications suggest it's a combination of save rate, share rate, and follower conversion from non-followers.

The improved audio search is underrated. As that feature gets used more, tracks with distinctive, hummable elements will benefit disproportionately. If your music has a memorable hook, melodic motif, or distinctive sound, make sure it appears early in your TikTok clips — that's what people will remember and search for.

For your TikTok strategy right now: post consistently (3–5x per week minimum), use the new analytics to identify which formats are converting viewers to followers, and focus on content that gives people a reason to visit your profile rather than just watch the video. Profile visits are now a leading indicator of the kind of engagement TikTok's algorithm rewards.
